One Late Night’s Work

The finished gift packs of 4 soap bars each

Wanna know what it took for me to prepare 20 of these cute little gift packs of 4 soap bars each? In a nutshell, as a mom of 2 toddlers around whom the world can be construed as an accident waiting to happen, I can only safely (and sanely) do work like this when they’re both asleep at night. :”> So here’s how I went about it.

When I first got a confirmation on Shazmin’s order (thank you SO much my dear, you helped make Kinder Soaps’ new year start with a bang!) for 20 custom-made gift packs, I made a shopping list of all the stuff I’d need for the project, namely:

  • 20 new flower pots
  • red netting
  • white netting
  • get new soap labels done at my neighbourhood printer (Lap Soon is an AWESOME digital print shop!)

I had to get to work pronto, as Shazmin’s daughter’s birthday party was on Sunday morning and she confirmed her order on Thursday. So my Friday was jam-packed with errands. It looked like this:

  • 8:30am Send Brandon to playschool
  • Do house chores and entertain Andrea at home
  • 10:30am Put Andrea to bed
  • 12:00pm Get dressed, wake Andrea, bustle her into the car to go fetch Brandon from playschool
  • 12:30pm Settle the kids at in-laws’ home for the afternoon
  • 1:00pm Head over to Lap Soon to print and trim labels
  • 2:00pm Zoom off to IKEA to buy pots and netting after lunch at the Curve
  • 4:00pm Zoom back home for a short break
  • 6:30pm Meet hubby and kids at in-laws’ for dinner
  • 9:30pm Come home and put the kids to bed
  • 10:30pm Start work on gift packs

First was the labeling, which I did at our dining table (it’s the only area that’s large enough to accommodate all my junk. Then once all the soap bars were neatly arranged in piles on the table I started filling in the pots with their contents:

Putting the soap bars into the gift packs

And once they were done I arranged them on the floor by the piano:

Pots of love

Then came the final wrapping up in white netting to hold all the contents together. I’m very glad I can avoid having to resort to plastic shrink wrapping as most conventional gift packs are done up. Oh alright, it wasn’t really an option to begin with since I don’t have the means or know-how to get the equipment to do shrink wrapping in the first place! :p But yeah, I’m glad I can use netting instead—and to good effect as well:

Ugly mug of me wrapping the finished gift packs

Hubby took this photo of me at about 12:15am. This was by far the toughest part of the night, as I had to sit on the floor for about an hour to put the finishing touches to the gift packs. I was sitting on a low foot stool to help keep my back straight—but with my 4-month-old baby bump it was still a real challenge to stay comfortable in that position! But I really was happy at work, so that kept the cursing at bay. :p The floor work included cutting up the huge swathes of white netting to wrap the pots in, arranging them nicely on the floor, then finishing off the pots with little red ribbons to neaten the tops of each gift pack.

And that was my first experience doing a large gift pack order at such short notice! I had a tremendous amount of fun in the process, but to be honest after that experience, I am even more conscious about listening to my body’s rest signals especially now that I’m pregnant. :p On Saturday I was still on a high from completing the job, but come Sunday I zombied through most of my hours spent with the kids.

However, all things considered, a little madness like this is what makes life SO enjoyable! What do You do to keep you excited about your life?

We Now Accept Payments Via Paypal!

Oh finally, oh joy, Kinder Soaps is now able to process your payments securely using PayPal, for a more complete online shopping experience! :D You’ll see it as a payment option as you make your way through the checkout process.

In other news, we found out today that we’ll be expecting a baby boy in June. :”> I’m just glad that with all the rushing around with my two little monkeys, baby no. 3 is growing very nicely.

I’m also happy to announce that I’m gearing up for this year’s Chinese New Year and Valentine’s double celebration by whipping up new soap recipes to fill your gift baskets! Also in the pipeline is a purifying french green clay facial mask which I am still perfecting, meant for congested and sensitive skin that needs some extra cleansing and pampering. Hoping to unveil that within the coming week.

Happy weekend!

Now Curing - Reformulated Dream Time Soap

I finally carved out some time a few nights ago to put my new formulation for my Dream Time Soap to the test—it’s turned out great, and my balcony smells so pleasant now that they’re sitting on my curing rack for the next 3-4 weeks to dry out.

This soap is intended for you who have sensitive skin that is prone to acne flare-ups, and especially those with reddened skin on the face when aggravated by stress or external pollutants. (Which of course means everyone else can use it too. :) ) My intention is to help soothe your inflamed skin, albeit perhaps only temporarily because of the vast number of underlying causes to your skin condition. Guess what—my skin behaves like this occasionally as well.

Cleanse Your Face With Extra Virgin Olive Oil

I kid you not. I’ve experimented with it on myself, and I love the results—soft, quenched skin that may not need additional moisturizer afterward. Here are some of the main reasons why I’m so excited about cleansing my face this way:

  • It’s fragrance, preservative, and colouring-free. Suitable even for the most sensitive of skin.
  • It’s cheap! Well, compared to buying your usual cleansers from cosmetic companies and pharmacies anyway.
  • I love the thought of how it nourishes your body, both inside and out.
  • Effectively clears your skin of the heaviest makeup without the use of harsh chemicals

If you’re curious about how easy, effective, gentle and simply wonderful this oil can be for your skin and its cleansing routine, read on!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Where's the sled?

The Kinder Soap Company wishes all Christian friends a blessed Christmas. And to one and all, may you find for yourselves a wellspring of lasting joy, peace and love this season that will carry you well into the new year ahead.

Crunch Time

When I left my job as head of customer service at a local unit trust firm, I thought my days of occasionally pulling all-nighters were at an end.

Since yesterday, I’ve been working till about 2am to make batches of soap for a client, for whom I am really grateful. But gosh, I didn’t realise how tiring it would be! I’ve been on my feet all night ever since the kids went to bed, and having to draw out even more of myself after a full day of non-stop activity. Granted, it Was a beautiful day (lunch and laughter with a new-found friend, buying new bedsheets for the kids, flipping through Real Simple mags in a 3-hour wait to see my gynae).

But everyone has limits. And I think I’m pushing past mine. Whether it’s a good or bad thing, we’ll just have to see what I’m like in a few hours when the kids wake up. :”>

Of Gifts, Family, and Food

It’s been 19 days since my last post—I’m so sorry to have left you all news-less for over 2 weeks! Let me tell you about some shop updates with regards to Christmas gifts, and also about what’s been going on in the household with regards to new family members and what a typical day for me is like.

Okay firstly, I’ve been taking a few orders for Christmas gift sets, whether custom made or as listed here. Making gift baskets is so much fun, I don’t tire of putting them together and making each one unique! I’ll find the time to upload some photos of baskets that I have done. :D

(Also, big thank-yous to my customers who have been stocking up on their soap as part of their own routine purchases, you really help keep Kinder Soaps afloat! And I’m really glad to know that your skin conditions have improved as well.)

Heeeeere's Kacang!

In other news, our newest family member would like to say hello. Meet Kacang, our beautiful, spirited Siamese Fighting Fish, otherwise known as betta splendens. He darts around his little tank perched on the shelf above my workstation so we keep each other company. He tells me when he’s hungry by swimming left and right repeatedly at the bottom of his tank, and swimming to the surface when I show him his jar of fish food. Smart little chappy.

Brandon waiting to be 'processed' (i.e. cleaned up) after breakfast

I’ve been spending LOTS of time in the kitchen. Unfortunately not making soap, but churning out meals for the family as often as I can. Managing the household has been a challenge for my husband and me, but I reckon we’re getting into a comfortable routine these days. With the two kids there is no shortage of cleaning to do. Thankfully, Brandon is more than happy to help with some easier chores like loading up the washing machine and dryer so it keeps him happy, while Andrea is quite contented to empty my lingerie drawers and place her stickers all over the sofa. Stepping back and assessing my daily activities, it really looks like 24 hours of cooking and eating, interspersed with chasing after the kids, cleaning them and whatever else, and sleep.

Let's hope the kids eat this though!

On the even brighter side of it, I’ve been making stuff like vichyssoise, pumpkin soup, bak kut teh, pasta baskes, oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies… Here’s the spinach and cheese tart on a shortcrust pastry base that’s going on the table tonight for dinner. :D Cooking is a big effort for me, but the results are always worth it. Plus I know there aren’t any funny ingredients going into what my family eats.

Andrea's gangster face

And finally, here’s a shot of Andrea at play, just for fun.

No More Bazaars For KS Temporarily :(

Ah, Life.

Just when I thought things were settling down after my mother’s passing, our maid tried to run away a few days ago. After sending her back to the agency, and without a viable replacement in sight for at least 3 months, my husband and I have been neck deep with house chores and managing the kids. The initial 2 days were madness but we’re getting used to all the juggling now. :p

So I think up till early next year it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to run any bazaar stalls for Kinder Soaps. I’ll miss meeting you all in person. But I’ll still be taking orders over the phone and through this website, so don’t worry if you need to restock your soap supplies, or even make that Christmas hamper you’ve been thinking about.

Another reason why I have to slow down a little is because I’m expecting baby number 3. :”> I’m about 9 weeks along now so managing energy levels is a tricky business at the moment. And it’s also interesting (and amusing) how some essential oils that I used to like now make me feel like throwing up.

Ah, Life. :) You take care now, and have a wonderful week ahead.

Mom Has Passed Away

My mom has finally gone to be with the Lord, breathing her last yesterday evening. While she will be dearly missed, we feel even more grateful that she no longer suffers and is in a far better place now.

Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers.
